Background

We all lose hair on a daily basis. It’s normal to lose hair.

Some types of hair loss can be permanent, such as male and female pattern baldness. Other types of hair loss are temporary and can be caused by various factors such as illness, stress, or cancer treatment.

At the moment, there are only two FDA-licensed drugs to treat hair loss. These treatments do not work for everyone, only work for as long as they are used, and can have side effects.

Solution

Over the past eight years, scientists from the ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ and COMSATS University, Pakistan have been studying how a naturally occurring sugar,  2-deoxy-D-ribose (2dDR), can help to heal wounds by promoting the formation of new blood vessels. During this research, the team also noticed that hair around the healing wounds appeared to grow more quickly compared to those that hadn’t been treated.

Our research suggests that the answer to treating hair loss might be as simple as using a naturally occurring 2dDR sugar to boost the blood supply to the hair follicles to encourage hair growth. Findings from the study show that the deoxy ribose sugar has similar effectiveness at regrowing hair as Minoxidil, and likely with fewer side effects.
