Access+ Travel Bursary

The Access+ Travel Bursary is available to eligible students for undergraduate open days and offer holder days. We are able to offer this financial support thanks to generous donations by our alumni.

Who is the Access+ Travel Bursary for?

This bursary is available to support students who meet the following criteria:

  • 2026 entry - Live in a postcode area that is assessed as being in a lower quintile in the Governments Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD Quintile of 1 or 2). You can check your area by searching for your postcode on our 2026 entry postcode checker.

Or:

  • You were entitled to free school meals at some point during the six years prior to your final KS4 year (the year you were aged 15-16).
  • You're care experienced
  • You're a care leaver
  • You're estranged from your family
  • You're a carer for an ill or disabled family member
  • You have parenting responsibilities
  • You're a forced migrant
  • You're a participant of Realising Opportunities attending an offer holder day at Sheffield
  • You're a participant on a ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ widening access programme - Access to ¾«¶«Ó°Òµ(all programmes), Access to ¾«¶«Ó°ÒµSummer School, Sutton Trust Summer School

What can I claim?

You can claim a contribution towards your travel costs, based on the straight-line distance (as the crow flies) from your home address to the university campus (postcode S10 2TN). 

The university will determine this distance and your reimbursement at the following rates:

Distance between home postcode and the University (using latitude and longitude to calculate the straight-line distance)

If you would like to check your reimbursement amount before making travel plans, please contact us via accesstravelbursary@sheffield.ac.uk and include the postcode that you will be travelling from for your open day visit.


How do I claim the Access+ Travel Bursary?

  1. Check to see if you live in an IMD quintile 1 or 2 for 2026 entry by using our  or meet any of the other criteria.

  3. Please note that the refund will be paid directly into your bank account approximately 5 to 6 weeks after we have received your completed claim forms.

Points to note

  • The contribution towards your travel costs is only available for your journey to undergraduate open days and offer holder days.
  • Distance travelled will be calculated by the University when processing your claim, using latitude and longitude, to calculate the straight-line distance.
  • Access+ Travel Bursary is only available for travel within the UK.
  • Accepting the travel bursary does not commit you to accept ¾«¶«Ó°Òµas your Firm or Insurance choice. Neither does it guarantee that we will be able to offer you a study place, if we have not already done so.
  • Your application must be received within two weeks of visiting the University.
  • You can only apply for the Access+ Travel Bursary once for each type of event i.e. open day and offer holder day
