Listen now to the Urban Radar’s first stand-alone feature podcast “Powering the North: A conversation with Andy Burnham and Steve Rotheram”.

Andy Burnham and Steve Rotheram
Steve Rotheram and Andy Burnham
  • Is Britain wired for inequality between regions?
  • Do we need a basic law and a written constitution to ensure that children get equal chances in life no matter where they live in England?
  • How can we hold the state accountable for cover ups in the face of grave injustices such as Hillsborough, Grenfell or the infected blood scandal?

These are some of the questions addressed by , Mayor of the Liverpool City Region and , Mayor of Greater Manchester and chair of Greater Manchester Combined Authority in their recent discussion with Beth Perry at the Festival of Debate organised by Opus Independents.

Following a short introduction from Tom Goodfellow and Beth Perry, Andy and Steve set out their 10-point plan to create a fairer and more equal Britain, through constitutional change, new laws, greater devolution to English city-regions and a focus on issues such as education, social housing, good work and net zero re-industrialisation.

The feature is followed as usual by a short reflection and analysis from Tom and Beth.
